Langley’s Walk to Remember – A Community Memorial Event

November 15, 2022 @ 2:00 pm - 8:00 pm

What

On Tuesday, November 15th, 2022, we will be holding our 2nd Annual Walk to Remember – a memorial walk at the Derek Doubleday Arboretum, held in recognition of National Bereavement Day, and to acknowledge community members that have been impacted by death of a loved one.

These have been challenging times for so many, and we want you to know that you’re not alone. A beautiful memorial ornament has been created featuring the dogwood flower on weather friendly synthetic paper so they can be personalized and hung onsite at the Derek Doubleday Arboretum, and used in interactive visual memorial throughout the community. This artwork is a small way to acknowledge grief and loss individually and as a community, and our hope is: to provide an opportunity for individuals to share and support one another; to acknowledge individual and collective losses; and to remember loved ones as we continue to move through these challenging time, as a community.

When

We’re inviting the community to come together, for a walk to remember on Tuesday, November 15th, 2022. The community is invited to join us in the afternoon (after 2pm) and hang a memorial ornament and walk the large path onsite with friends and family at their leisure; AND to join us in the evening at 6:30pm, for a Candlelight Memorial Walk as we walk the path together, in memory of loved ones and in support of our community.

Who

Our Community. We want to invite all of the Langleys to get involved, and to participate in their own ways, and to come together to acknowledge the losses we’ve all experienced. The event will be hosted by the Langley Hospice Society and Langley Division of Family Practice, and community volunteers.

How

The general public, community organizations, businesses, groups, and individuals are welcome and invited to participate.  Individuals can pick up and personalize an ornament onsite at the park on November 15th, or in advance through the Langley Hospice Society. Local community groups, care homes, offices, etc., who would like to have their own display(s) are invited to pick-up ornaments at the Langley Hospice Society’s Supportive Program Centre at 20660 – 48th Avenue, in Langley.

Where

Interactive memorial displays at participating community groups, organizations, care homes, and public spaces using artwork provided which has a dogwood flower on the front and blank space on the back to memorialize loved ones through a personal message.

Staff and community volunteers will be onsite at the Derek Doubleday Arboretum and Community Park on Tuesday, November 15th throughout the afternoon and evening, beginning at 2:00pm, with the hope of inviting folks to visit on their own schedule, and hang an ornament or walk the path. Local music groups and others will be invited to perform in small groups onsite throughout the day.  Activities will culminate in a candlelight memorial walk at 6:30pm that evening. There will be lights and lanterns and memorial ornaments hung on the trees along the pathway. Friends and neighbours are invited to come by, walk the path and personalize an ornament, and volunteers will be on hand to provide support and resources.

Principle

A community event for the community. A way to acknowledge, remember and celebrate the lives of those who have died; holding space as a community for those who have experienced loss.
