Langley Hospice Society – Who We Are, What We Do – Brochure
The Langley Hospice Society is:
- A community-based non-profit charitable organization established in l983.
- Committed to providing emotional, practical and spiritual support for people who are living with a terminal illness, their family and friends, throughout the last stages of illness, at the time of death and bereavement.
- Funded through general donations, fund-raising events, memorial and in-honour gifts, planned giving, grants, Second Story Treasures Thrift Store, BC Gaming, United Way and a service contract with Fraser Health. There are no fees for our programs or services.
Hospice is a philosophy of care that:
- Values life and accepts death as a normal process
- Does not hasten or delay death
- Emphasizes comfort, dignity and quality of life
- Provides sensitivity and support for individuals experiencing a terminal illness and their families
- Is available to patients and their families at home, in hospital, in hospice residence or community care
Palliative Care
- When medical intervention will no longer prolong or extend the client’s life, palliative care is offered. It is the active compassionate care of those with end-of-life issues within the supportive structure of the palliative care team and the family.
- Palliative care can take place in the home, or in a home-like environment. The client and family play a major role in setting the goals for care.
- Palliative care is multi-disciplinary in its approach. The palliative care team encompasses the client, the family, and the community and its resources in scope. It can include pastoral care, social workers, nurses, physicians, hospice workers, pharmacists, therapists and volunteers.
“You matter because of who you are.
You matter to the last moment of your life,
and we will do all we can
not only to help you die peacefully,
but also to live until you die.”Dame Cicely Saunders
